Customers' Calves Bring Premium Prices

Several bull customers collected dividends on their past investments in Wolf Creek Angus Ranch genetics by consigning calves to Wolf Creek Angus Ranch-Sponsored Special Calf Sales held recently at Sylvan Sales Commission, in Sylvan Grove, Kansas.

Provided to prospective buyers before both sales was pertinent genetic information, including growth, maternal, and carcass merit expected progeny differences (EPDs), and cow energy, weaning, feedlot, grid, and beef value indexes on the bulls which had sired the consigned calves. Also provided was detailed information regarding the pre- and post-weaning management of the consigned calves, including spring and fall vaccination records.

A group of 16 steers consigned by Glenn Allen, of Lebanon, topped the October 9, 2006 sale, bringing $925.28 per head. The steers weighed 845 pounds and sold for a bid of $109.50 per hundredweight (cwt). The next high-selling offering in the sale was a group of 9 steers also consigned by Allen. Selling at $840.09 per head, the calves weighed an average of 683 pounds, and brought a bid of $123.00 per cwt. Both groups of steers were sired by Wolf Creek sons of Summitcrest High Prime 0H23 and TC Advantage.

The second Wolf Creek Angus Ranch-sponsored sale took place on November 6, 2006. Topping that sale were 5 head of steers that weighed 759 pounds and brought $743.82 per head at a bid of $98.00 per cwt. The group was consigned by Rodney Dick, of Lucas, and were sired by Wolf Creek sons of Mr Wix of McCumber 204 and B/R New Design 036. The second high-selling group consisted of 80 steers weighing 720 pounds and sold for $721.80 per head at a bid of $100.25. This group of steers was consigned by Kyle and Nick Brant, of Lucas. The Brants have been long-time purchasers of Wolf Creek bulls, and their cow herd includes several generations of Wolf Creek genetics. The sires of the steers included sons of Summitcrest High Prime 0H23, B/R New Design 323, and TC Advantage.

Top-selling heifers at the November sale were 3 head consigned by Rodney Dick. The heifers weighed 697 pounds and brought a bid of $92.00 per cwt. for $641.24 per head. The second-high selling heifer consignment was a group of 4 from Richard Ekholm, Inman. This group weighed an average of 633 pounds and brought $595.02 per head at a bid of $94.00. They were sired by a Wolf Creek son of TC Advantage.

At the January 15, 2007, sale, 22 steers consigned by J W Farm/Joy Schloctermeier, of Ellinwood, topped the sale at $897.12 per head. Selling for $91.10 per cwt., the steers averaged 965 pounds and were sired by Wolf Creek sons of QAS Traveler 23-4 and Leachman Right Time. The second-high selling steers were consigned by Ronnie and Dennis Letsch, of Luray. The 34 steers weighed 835 pounds and sold for $781.56 per head at a bid of $93.60 per cwt. The Letsch brothers have also been long-time purchasers of Wolf Creek genetics, using sons of B/R New Design 036, California Traveler, Paramont Ambush 2172, and Gardens Prime Time.

Top-selling heifers at the sale were a group of 10 consigned by J W Farm. The heifers weighed 938 pounds and brought a bid of $85.85, for $805.27 per head. Second-high selling heifers were a group of 31 consigned by Jerry Rush, of Geneseo. The heifers weighed 750 pounds and sold for $100.00 per cwt., or $750.00 per head. These heifers were sired by sons of TC Advantage, B/R New Design 036, Leachman Right Time, Hunts Calculator 2720, and SAF Fame.


Wolf Creek Angus Ranch sponsors two or three Special Calf Sales for its customers each year, with the first sale usually scheduled on the 3rd Monday in January and the fall sales occurring in October and early November. Both sales take place at Sylvan Sales Commission, in Sylvan Grove, Kansas. All Wolf Creek Angus Ranch bull customers are provided with consignment forms, and all are welcome to consign calves to the sales.
